Statement
Laura Alexander creates work is driven by wonder. She plays off the intrinsic qualities of materials creating a vocabulary that is her own. She builds layers of paper to manipulate light and shadows. The shadows themselves are as much part of the piece as the art that casts them. Like a scientist, she studies the materials, pushing and pulling their limitations. The majority of her work is white creating a rainbow of subtleties for stark shadows to frolic. Recently, she has begun incorporating reflected color in her work as well as occasional gold or silver leaf. The work is labor intensive and precise while remaining playful and fresh.
